Dear Gavin Newsom:

You put a moratorium on the death penalty and dismantled the execution chambers. You have not said how you plan to handle those who are convicted in capital murder cases other than to release them to the general prison population. What follows are four questions that anyone making a decision on the death penalty should be able to answer. Please answer these questions.

Samuel Eliezer Herr and Juri (Julie) Kibuishi were murdered May 21 and 22, 2010. Sam was a decorated combat veteran who made close friends. He was helpful and his friends said that he would give you the shirt off of his back and throw in his pants for a laugh. Julie was a kind and compassionate person and everyone who knew her fell in love with her.
The first book about the murders of Sam Herr and Julie Kibuishi is Killing for You, by Keith Elliot Greenberg. Keith says that Steve Herr, father of Sam Herr, compelled him to research and write a book about the murders. Steve has often commented that too much attention is given to the killers and not enough attention is given to victims.
SAN QUENTIN — Prison officials are investigating the death of condemned inmate Jonathan Fajardo, 30, as a homicide. At 9:55 a.m. today, Fajardo was stabbed in his chest and neck with an inmate-made weapon while on the East Block Housing Unit recreation yard complex at San Quentin State Prison. He was pronounced dead at 10:34 a.m.

A Costa Mesa woman was sentenced on Nov. 8 to serve two years and eight months in prison for being an accessory after the fact of a 2010 murder at the Joint Forces Training Base and another Costa Mesa murder. The court dismissed a third count of being an accessory on Sept. 12, 2018, Rachel Mae Buffett, who was convicted in September on two counts being an accessory after the fact in the murders of Samuel Herr and Juri “Julie” Kibuishi more than eight years ago.
